Teamwork

TEAMWORK!

Teamwork and team building were a large focus for our first few weeks of school and will continue to be a focus for the year.
We were crowned Tug O' War champs for 2015!

Students participated in a variety of team building and applied the scientific method
to building the tallest tower, cup stacking and Saving Sam challenges.

Picture Book A  Day!
Our class is participating in a variety of literacy activities including a picture book a day. The students are loving listening and learning about a variety of topics including our brain, Einstein,  Paul Erdos, and Hiawatha just to name a few.  They are also reminded about kindness, compassion and being human in some of our other picture books.

Art and Culture Week
Students participated in a variety of activities that included listening to a drumming performance, participating in a drumming workshop, drama, dance and art.

TERRY FOX RUN
We finished the month of September with our annual Terry Fox Run with the High School!

The month certainly did go by quickly.  These  are a few of the events that took place while we were learning routines, expectations and curriculum.

Welcome Back!!

Welcome Back to School!

Are you nervous?  I am! In fact, I had a dream (or was it a nightmare) that it was my first day back to school and students were due to arrive in a week, however students started showing up that same day.  There was confusion and pandemonium exuding from the hallways!  I am glad it was only a dream/nightmare!

There is no doubt that many feelings are experienced during the first week back.  Many of us are anxious, nervous, sleepless, excited,  have doubt, fear, wonder about the unknown or all of these emotions combined. I am looking forward to getting to know you and learning all about you and in that way we will soon be back into a routine.   We are going to have a great year working together!

Kid President always has some positive words of wisdom.  I shared this post last year and would like to share it  again this year.  Enjoy!

June

Time sure flies when you are having fun!  It is hard to believe it is June already. It truly has been a joy to work with your kids each and every day!  They make me Smile!

We have had a lot of events since the last Post!  This post will include many photos from the last 6 weeks!

Music Monday/Dress like a Rock Star and RVS Has Talent!  We had quite a few entries from our class.  We  have talented kids!  Congratulations  to all of our participants!

Thank you to all parents who helped with our Track Meet!  We appreciate your help.  The students had a successful day thanks to you.  Many students had  the opportunity to go on to Counties and Zones!  Congratulations!

Students worked cooperatively to create magazines with a theme of their choice.  Below are a few pictures of the finished product!

We read the novel Holes by Louis Sacher.  A part of  the novel referred to a pair of stolen shoes.  Students drew their favorite shoes and wrote a descriptive paragraph called Stories with Sole!

Math:  Our last unit focused on Tessellations.  Students created Escher style tessellations as well as colored a rotation.

Aztec Movie Posters - Social Studies.  The students were very creative when making their Movie Posters based on an Aztec book they read.

Cortes timeline.

CCA - Drama - students from both terms combined classes to put on a Street Fest for the rest of the school.  We had a variety of groups from dance performances, monologues, plays, and theatre sports.

I hoped you enjoyed a few of the many pictures!  Your kids are going to do great things.  In a few short weeks, they will be in High School!

Art Integration

April

We have been integrating Art with Language Arts, Social and  Math.

Students read the novel, Freak The Mighty and learned that Kevin has a vast vocabulary.  He used the word sobriquet in the book to indicate a Nick Name for both Kevin and Max; thus Freak The Mighty! Students either came  up with a nick name or used the nick name they already have to create Graffiti Art.
We examined types of  lettering and students practiced outlining their name before moving onto the larger sheet of paper.   Some students preferred using water colours while others enjoyed using chalk or oil pastels. Whatever the medium, the results were fabulous.

In Social Studies, students have been learning about the Great Era of Peace in Japan during the 1600's and how they moved from a country in isolation to a country of adaptation.  Students learned how to write their name in Japanese using a Japanese name converter.  They also included a Japanese image such as a cherry tree in blossom, the geography of Japan or other symbol of Japan.

In Math, we have just finished up learning how to find the surface area of rectangular prisms, cubes, triangular prisms and cylinders.  To integrate art with math, students are planning and creating miniature cities.  Below are a few pictures of the cities in progress.
